In the entertainment industry, some talent are hoping to be the “winners”. What makes you a winner? A winner is a person who trains in their profession, takes the time to learn new methods, submits auditions on a timely basis and always shows up early for bookings. These talent are respectful to the production team, are not demanding, and listen well without giving their opinion unless it is asked for.
Others in this industry may feel than a ribbon or trophy makes them a more valuable talent in their industry. Frequently to be in the running for an award, talent may need to pay to submit themselves for said award. The talent may need to submit files in funky formats and the talent also would need to pay to attend the awards ceremony if the are nominated. Let’s not forget that most actors want to have a new outfit for the big event and spend more money choosing the “right” look for the evening.
When these various awards ceremonies happen, remember that there are no guarantees to be nominated, or to win the ever coveted award. Frequently the judges are kept secret until the live event. If the judges are announced prior to the event, the last thing any talent should do is try to schmooze or bribe a judge to get a vote.
Once the final win list is released, it’s time to get back to everyday life. Whether you have 0 – 264 trophies and awards, you are still a working talent and when you audition you are not holding your trophy while making that video tape, nor are you doctoring up your audio file to brag about your latest wins. You are still a working talent hoping to book their next gig. Trophies are a form of self-gratification. They will not get you a raise, they will not get you hired, they will not pay your bills and they will not buy you food when you are hungry.
It is your choice, to want to shine with sparkly trophies, if you get one, or to shine based on your busy workload and continued practice in your genre of acting to be a successful talent in the entertainment industry. You can do it all and have a great time, but we still say you are never a loser if you do not win an award.
